DVD - Last Supper in Horstley Street

This documentary traces the last days of the Hendricks family in District Six before their forced removal from their family home in the late 1970s. Narrated by the mother of the family, Latiefa Hendricks, this film provides a sensitive portrayal of the anxiety, heartache and dislocation experienced by this family as a result of the South African government’s Group Areas Act. The Hendricks family was one of the last families to leave District Six and fought a twenty year battle to remain in their family home. Set against the scarred landscape of the bulldozed District, Last Supper in Horstley Street documents the family's last days in their home and the anxiety and pain of their forced removal. The documentary then focuses on the family’s life in the barren new township of Belhar, where the lack of social services and community life, has created new social problems such as crime. The grief and sense of rupture experienced by the Hendricks family echoes the experience of millions of South African families who have been torn from their homes and communities as a result of the Group Areas Act.
