Coon Carnival: New Year in Cape Town, past to present, not only acknowledges the place of the Coon carnival in the culture and history of Cape Town, it also gives testimony to the survival and evolution of the Carnival through decades of colonialism and political oppression. And although it is serious in its approach, it cannot escape the spirit of the Carnival as captured in the many interviews and photographs included in its pages.
